Summer at Breakthrough:
Striving & Discovering!

Summer at Breakthrough is a time of excitement and intensity! From the Graduation celebration to the unique “Students-Teaching-Students” model of our Summer Academy, each moment is filled with Breakthrough spirit at morning greeting and throughout the day, with creative Teaching Fellows, and with energized students.

Many Breakthrough Moments

In late June, Breakthrough celebrated the graduating class of 2017 with a mission-driven ceremony that engaged students, families, Teaching Fellows and Breakthrough supporters. This ceremony demonstrates our commitment to education and to the Breakthrough community. Breakthrough engages its families in very special traditions, sharing the triumph, from walking graduates down the isle to a special pinning ceremony.

Concurrently, we prepared our Teaching Fellows for the season ahead with a two-week intensive training session led by Breakthrough leadership and staff.

Behind the scenes, Breakthrough’s signature multi-layered team partnered to guide, support and challenge Teaching Fellows and students alike – master-teacher Instructional Coaches for each subject area at each site, Deans of Students and of Faculty at both GFS and Drexel, and an additional team to manage each of the two sites.

Students arrived July 3, 2017 at each of our key partner institutions, Germantown Friends School, and Drexel University. Rising 7th graders began their Breakthrough journey as five more grades continued their paths.

New to this year, our 10th- and 11th graders benefitted from a remarkable partnership with Swarthmore College. All students traveled for full days of courses for six weeks on the Swarthmore College campus, where the curriculum blended college application readiness coaching with stimulating course-strands about identity and community.

Visiting Days

This summer Breakthrough held three visiting days at its two key partner sites -- Drexel University and Germantown Friends School. Students, teaching fellows, instructors and staff offered great insight about Breakthrough. One of the program highlights was a  Site Tour led by program staff, which provided a glimpse into Breakthrough summer classroom experience.

Becoming a Teaching Fellow: Jessica Rodriguez

My name is Jessica Rodriguez, I am an upcoming senior at East Carolina University, in Greenville, NC. I am studying Middle Grades Education with a concentration in Social Studies and English.

I want to work with students that need to see people like them in leadership. People who have dark curly hair and brown skin, people who must put themselves through college, people who know what it is like to struggle.

Education makes the difference in a person's life, and that is the reason it is one of my passions.

Student Insights: Nathalia R.

Nathalia is an 8th-grade student at Martha Washington Middle School. She decided to attend Breakthrough because she wanted a challenge. Breakthrough summers help her better prepare for the future. Nathalia was a Breakthrough student speaker at Drexel University Visiting Day.

Student Stories: Cameron F.

My name is Cameron. I am an 8th grader, and I attend Anna Lingelbach Elementary School.

At Breakthrough, I was taught to be the bigger person and be a role model for others. I also learned that it’s a good idea to try something new. One little idea that you think is minor, may change your life if you grow it, and you would be glad you attempted it....

I appreciate Breakthrough. They gave me a good mindset to make me want to chase my dreams. I am glad to be here.

Breakthrough thanks our summer high school interns and volunteers from the community.

Our summer program is successful due to the support of Breakthrough Home stay hosts and the University of Pennsylvania who provide housing for our teaching fellows.
