Advancing Core Curricula and Teacher Training

Breakthrough Philly has been selected by the national Breakthrough Collaborative to participate in a pilot curriculum and assessment program this summer!

Thanks to the partnership, Breakthrough Philly will implement eight new, professionally designed skills-based curricula for our core subjects: Math, Reading, Writing and Science. The curricula and lesson plans were developed by teams of experienced teachers and content experts specifically for Breakthrough. Aligned to the new Common Core State Standardsdeveloped by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers, the curricula will prepare our students to excel in the competitive, college-preparatory high schools they will attend. Each curriculum includes pre- and post-summer assessments, weekly assessments, lesson plans, visual instruction plans, and daily homework assignments.

To ensure our teacher interns' preparation for the classroom, we will expand our teacher training to 10 days this summer! In addition to sessions on education theory, lesson planning, classroom management, and active participation, the training will incorporate lesson modeling from our experienced teacher coaches, and practice teaching opportunities for teacher interns.
