Instead of painting the picture of failure in Philadelphia’s community, I wanted to paint the picture of hope, like Malcom X once said “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” The education that Breakthrough would provide would be my passport for my future.
Hello ladies and gentlemen, my name is Ahkeel Timothy and I am a Breakthrough student. I was born in Dominica and came to America when I was 3 years old in 2001 to pursue the American dream. I have always been curious. I always wanted to understand everything around me and I hate not knowing the answers. In elementary school, I wasn’t learning everything I wanted to learn. School was more about drama and fights than the exploration of academic pursuits. So I looked for something else. I heard about an opportunity to get ahead and make sure that I was going to go to college, and I took it. At the time my sister was in college pursuing her bachelor’s degree, but my brother was struggling to get through school. I knew I needed support. So I applied to Breakthrough.
My parents always pushed for me to work towards my goals and achieve my dreams and to never stop growing my mind so I would not fall through the same path as many my fellow African Americans. African Americans who often failed to exceed the expectations of their oppressed predecessors and make what we’ve become a shining embodiment of our black pride. Instead of painting the picture of failure in Philadelphia’s community, I wanted to paint the picture of hope, like Malcom X once said “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” The education that Breakthrough would provide would be my passport for my future. So I could feed my thirst for knowledge and achieve my dream, to go to college.
As a student here at Breakthrough I obtained the hope and inspiration that I needed to make a difference in today’s society. Breakthrough is glimmer of hope especially when a lot of these types of opportunities aren’t open for everyone. As a Philadelphian student I was granted with the opportunity of exposure to new passions and dreams. It was at breakthrough were I played my first chess game. This opened a whole new world for me creating one more dream that wouldn’t have existed without breakthrough. It was the breakthrough staff that filled my mind with the knowledge that I would carry on through college and further. Breakthrough allows each student to have a broad array of careers paths for their future. Now I know that I am one step closer to my dreams by having the power to make difference in our society. Breakthrough has opened the door for so many career options: law and governance, biology and physics, astronomy, and engineering.
I know that in life there are a lot of obstacles and you must take initiative and effort. I took that initiative with Breakthrough. Breakthrough is a bridge that carries and molds the mind of each student dreams to reality. You need help along the way and Breakthrough helps you figure out how to get there. We are the foundation of the future and with the help of programs like Breakthrough we can change the world.
