Breakthrough Experience: Breakthrough Student (2004-2010); Breakthrough Teacher (Summer 2013)

In the summer of 2005, Brittney would never have guessed that she would one day become a Breakthrough teacher, primarily because she was just beginning her journey as a Breakthrough student. A shy girl with a a love of science, Brittney decided to apply to Breakthrough after hearing a presentation at her school: “I thought it would be something to do over the summer that would help me with school, but it was so much more than that.”
Brittney faced her first challenge on day one when she was paired with a “buddy” – an 8th grade classmate who would be with her throughout the summer. It was a terrifying thought for Brittney, who had never interacted with students outside of her own school. Before the summer was over, she realized that the buddy system she once despised had taught her invaluable lessons in social interaction and most importantly, confidence.
"It has been almost ten years since I started Breakthrough and I still remember my teachers. I may not remember their names, but I remember how much they inspired me. They are the reason I want to be a Breakthrough teacher, to be like them and to hopefully one day be the kind of teacher that inspires a student."
Currently, Brittney is completing her junior year at Penn State University where she majors in Psychology. Having come full circle from her early days at Breakthrough, Brittney is gearing up for her first summer as a Breakthrough science teacher. Her excitement brews as she connects with her fellow teachers and counts down the days to teacher training.
