Speech given to Breakthrough supporters at the 2009 Breakthrough with Breakthrough Champions
The Breakthrough experience is one that can only be found at Breakthrough. I am proud to say that I am part of Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia and that I have enjoyed every minute of it.
My first thoughts of the program were that I would rather spend my summer on something better. What nerve I had. I felt the homework was too much, and it had to go, or else I just wouldn’t enjoy my stay there. Eventually, I learned otherwise.
Breakthrough would not be Breakthrough, if it had not been for the friends and family. When work seemed like it was too much, you always had a friend or teacher to call. During my time in Breakthrough, the teachers have grown on us, from being the enemy because of all the homework they have given us, to being some of our friends. From the stupid corny jokes they’ve said, to the little snacks they’ve brought to thank us for our hard work.
Because of Breakthrough, I have more opportunities and more doors open then before. What Breakthrough has done is allowed me to use my mind in all sorts of new and positive ways. They have taught me how to expand my mind to see more than just one perspective. I have also developed the skills to work hard when it’s needed, and play later, when work is done.
I would not have made it without the support of the great staff at Breakthrough. This collected group of people helped me smooth out the bumps that came along the way. And a special thanks to mom who is the person who forced me up the hill against my will and made sure I completed the program.
I love Breakthrough and have decided to stay very dedicated to it, from little volunteer work, to continuing on to do the high school Breakthrough program. I must give back. Breakthrough holds some of the greatest memories and experiences of my teenage life. From an honest point of view, this was one of the best things I’ve put my mind to do, and am proud I have done so. From me, my parents, and everyone else in Breakthrough’s student family, thank you for the opportunity.
