How to Apply

At Breakthrough there are two great opportunities to become a teacher!

Teacher Residency:

The Most Meaningful Nine Weeks of Your Life!

The Princeton Review ranks Breakthrough’s summer pre-service teaching residency as a “Top Ten Internship” along with the White House, Supreme Court, Google and MTV.

Summer Teaching Fellows commit to one summer in which they:

  • Teach up to two core subjects and one elective

  • Participate in ongoing reflection about the work, the students, the program, and their personal involvement

  • Serve as an active and positive role model for the students in the program

  • Work with students’ families to best serve students’ needs

The Summer Teacher Residence Application becomes available in October!  Early decision applications are due by mid-January and regular decision applications  are due by mid-February.  To learn more about summer teaching residency, please visit the website of our national affiliate, Breakthrough Collaborative.

Teach in the School Year Program:

Help middle school students develop a love of learning and the skills necessary to earn admission to selective high schools!

School Year Program teachers work on a volunteer basis instructing at least one academic class, assisting students with school assignments and projects, and supporting the overall program during special trips and workshops.  The School Year Program is held on Saturdays throughout the school year.

Currently, we are partnering with Arcadia University as a fieldwork placement option at our Germantown Friends School location and the DragonsTeach program of Drexel University as an internship opportunity for our Drexel Middle School location.  Secondary education students participate in 8 hours of training focused on specialized instructional and management strategies, followed by 10 to 12 weeks of teaching social studies or STEM in Breakthrough’s school year program.  Also included are regular workshops designed to further develop students’ teaching practices.  Interested participants should contact Miriam Leisman, Director of Programs, at

“Before this fieldwork, I had almost no experience in the classroom. Breakthrough really got my feet wet in the field of education. I now have a much better understanding of what it is like to teach in a classroom. I don't believe that any other fieldwork could have immersed me in the classroom so effectively.”-Arcadia participant Fall 2013
