ABOUT COLLEGE BOUND
We are thrilled to launch a new program for Breakthrough Scholars and Alumni in high school called Breakthrough: College Bound. The mission of College Bound is to provide preparation for BT Alumni and their families to be successful in the college application process. This year, we will offer six workshops and college tours, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the following Saturdays:
October 26, 2024 | November 16 | December 14
January 11, 2025 | February 22 | May date TBD
In addition to team building at Tree Top Quest, community service, and office field trips, we'll provide helpful content in these workshops:
Career Panel & Discussion
As Breakthrough Scholars in middle school, you had the opportunity to hear from many professionals from a variety of career fields during our Career Conversations speaker series, but now it’s time to go deeper. Have in-depth conversations and participate in hands-on projects with professionals from career fields in law, tech, healthcare, entrepreneurship, business, among others. This is your opportunity to ask tough questions and make connections to careers you aspire to!
Resume Building and Interview Preparation
Whether you’re applying for a summer job or preparing for college applications, a resume and/or interview will be a required part of the process. At this workshop, you will hear from experts about the components of a successful resume and interview. You will complete your own resume that you can use and add to while in high school. The day will end with a round of mock interviews to hone your speaking and presentation skills.
College 101 and Personal Finance
Let's dive into the college admissions process and get financial planning advice in this workshop. Topics include commonly used college terminology, College Fair conduct, SAT/ACT vs. Test Optional schools, testing and application timelines -- we'll even participate in an admission committee simulation! We'll start the conversation about college affordability and personal finances, covering such topics as loan types, fiancial aid, applying for scholarships, loan forgiveness, personal finance (budgeting, debt, etc.)
College Tours in Washington, D.C.
Perhaps you've heard of different college names and/or have been on a university campus. This workshop will be our opportunity to be college students for a day. We'll take a campus tour of a few colleges, universities, and HBCUs in Washington, D.C. Our trip will include informational sessions and walking tours.
All students who graduated from Breakthrough Summer/SYP middle school program are eligible to attend College Bound. As always, our programs are FREE and include bus passes and meals while at the program. To indicate your participation, please register/complete the form via one of the options below, and we'll be in touch about next steps.
